On inflation and the food industry
Friday, and a short note from my project of trying to write short notes.
We like cheese in our family. Tasty cheese. My father usually says: ”It’s not cheese if it doesn’t make your palate itch.” So, that’s one starting point. Another is that our younger son said Gruyere was his favorite food when he was two (it still is if you ask him). So, when the cheese starts to lose taste, we lose it (our senses, that is). And that’s what happened. So, that combined with last month’s discussion on inflation is what inspired this note.
On inflation and the food industry: I know 500 grams has become 450 for the same price. I know 1 liter of milk costs 30-50% more today than I while back. But I did not know that inflation in the food industry also seems to impact time. Making it shorter. Time is relative and all that, but still… Altering time, isn’t that really hard? Maybe the food industry cracked the code. And if that’s not the case, then I wonder how my entire cheese-crazy family all have the same notion: that different cheese brands that we buy regularly (none mentioned, none forgotten), and that are supposed to be matured for say 12-18 months, taste less today than a year ago? Could it be Corona and we all lost our taste? Or could it be that 18 months is now 16 months, just as 500 grams has become 450? I am genuinely wondering.
